El Rito Elementary Students Create Mural

El Rito Elementary art teacher Jackson Dickstein shares: “This mural was executed by my five through nine-year-old students and I at El Rito Elementary. The paintings of local landmarks seen at the top of each panel were painted by me, and the figures and interactions painted below were done by my students. Every figure represents a self-portrait of each student engaged in something they struggle with, and in many cases how they strive to overcome that struggle. Examples range from “struggling to help my grandpa gather wood” to “remembering to give my goats water”. The fourth panel has been left unpainted by students. It depicts the ruins of the ancient indigenous settlement of Sapawe, located just outside of modern day El Rito. It remains untouched in honor of those whose struggles came long before ours.”

El Rito Artists Open Call Exhibit

See the work of El Rito artists at Café de Abiquiu through the end of March, 2023. This is our third open call exhibit sponsored by the ERAA. Work is available for purchase. Participating artists: Lynn Anderson, Steven Williams, Ted Harsha, Barbara Campbell, Andrew Furse, Shawn Demarest, Anne Keener, Larry Sparks, KT Vanderbrook, Charles Knight, Josef Weese, Robert Nicolais, Lucia Vinograd and Terry Vanderbrook.

2023 El Rito Arts Festival May 20 & 21

A few months ago we held our first May event. The Arts Festival was well attended! Folks visited local artists in their studios, enjoyed live music and purchased work from artisans at the Mercado. Andrew Furse and Shawn Demarest coordinated the festival and have agreed to coordinate a similar 2023 event. (Yay!) AND Rachel Briggs has agreed to work her magic and create our ads/posters. You may have seen her ads in local newspapers.

El Rito Studio Tour and Mercado applications will appear on our website in March 2023.

Our traditional October Studio Tour won’t happen this year (2022). It may happen in 2023 if a coordinator steps up to make it happen! This needs to be decided by the end of the year so we can apply for grant support. Send an email to elritoartassociation@gmail.com if you would like to be involved in our board and/or coordinate a 2023 October Studio Tour.

Weaving Together: Fiber Arts at the Historic El Rito Campus of Northern New Mexico College

Curator, Barbara Berger, director of the Fiber Arts Program in the 1990’s at Northern New Mexico College- El Rito, selected students and teachers to feature in the catalogue and upcoming exhibition. Through interviews and photo shoots this 45-page catalogue gives a snapshot of each participant and an overview of El Rito’s rich weaving history.

The catalogue will be available at the Weaving Together exhibit at the Galeria del Rito on the Northern New Mexico College El Rito campus, May 21st and 22nd, 2022 (during the El Rito Arts Festival) and May 28th and 29th, 2022.

The catalogue is also available at the Abiquiu Inn Gift Shop.

Sponsored by the El Rito Art Association and a grant from the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area.

The ERAA Receives LANL Grant

We are happy to announce the ERAA received a $40,000 two-year grant from the Los Alamos Lab Foundation. This grant will support hiring art teachers in our local elementary and middle school, after school art programming for high school students and developing a summer art program at Northern New Mexico College in El Rito. Volunteers on the our board along with the LANL Foundation made this happen. Thank You!

The Studio Tour and Mercado Return!

After cancelling our 2020 and 2021 Studio Tour and Mercado, the ERAA board voted to reschedule these events to May 21st & 22nd, 2022. This is our first spring Arts Festival and 34th Studio Tour. We hope you will join us! Special to this year’s event is an exhibition of local weaving and the release of a catalog celebrating El Rito’s rich weaving history.
All events are free and hours are 10am - 5pm both days.

2021 El Rito Studio Tour Postponed

On August 16th at a special telephone meeting of the Board of the El Rito Art Association, all board members were unanimous in deciding that the El Rito Studio Tour should be postponed from its October 2nd and 3rd dates. The deteriorating Covid-19 situation in New Mexico is the primary reason for this action. Many of our artists are elderly and at increased risk. Due to the open house nature of the event, and unlike limited access venues with controlled entry points, there is no possible method for screening tour attendees’ vaccination status. The outlook for holding an enjoyable weekend with broad community attendance has become sadly negative.

The probable date we hope to reschedule for is May 21st and 22nd, 2022. The entire board expressed strong regrets that the flagship event of the El Rito Art Association would not be held for a second year in a row. We all looked forward to a fun tour and the increased business that the tour provides.

Participant’s fees can be refunded if requested, or will be held for the May 2022 event. For further information, or if you wish to comment, please contact President Barbara Campbell (becampbell33@gmail.com) or Treasurer Jim Moffitt (nmjim2@yahoo.com)

2019 Annual Report & Outlook for 2020

EL RITO ART ASSOCIATION

2019 Annual Report & Outlook for 2020

Dear Friends,

Thanks to the support of our community and partners, 2019 was a great year of growth for the El Rito Art Association. Through a partnership with Northern New Mexico College, we now have a home! The Arts Plaza located on the El Rito Campus of NNMC includes 2 large workshop spaces, an outdoor space which allowed us to expand the Mercado and a gallery to showcase local artists and grow our year-round programs.

Highlights from 2019 include…

  • Our mask making workshop in conjunction with the El Rito Fiesta

  • Our Youth Works Corp Open Studios

  • Our sold out Tin Workshop with Carmen Campos

  • Three Open Studio/Ornament Making Workshops in September

  • The 33rd Annual El Rito Studio Tour and Mercado which brought over 600 visitors to El Rito

  • And our Winter Wednesdays potluck dinners and movie screenings as part of our continuing education class at NNMC (Join us on Wednesdays through February and enroll at the door for free!)

Looking forward to 2020…

  • We’ll soon be opening our pottery studio at the Arts Plaza where we’ll have workshops & open studios.

  • We have plans to have multiple Mercados in 2020 to offer local artists more opportunities to showcase and sell their work, while bringing the community together around art, food and music.

  • We’re also thrilled to share that we’ve been awarded a 2020 Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area grant to host multiple workshops highlighting traditional arts of Northern New Mexico.

Our work isn’t possible without the support of the community. Please make a contribution today to help make 2020 our best year yet. We’re a small organization that knows how to do a lot with a little so even a gift of $25 goes a long way! Donate online here or send a check made payable to: El Rito Art Association, PO Box 143, El Rito, NM 87530.

El Rito Art Association supports and nurtures the El Rito art community through public programming, education and maintaining the traditional art culture of Northern New Mexico.
