SHAWN DEMAREST
I consider myself a place based oil painter. That is, I respond to my surroundings and strive to reflect back what I see and feel. I moved to El Rito from Portland, OR in 2020 after visiting during the 2019 Studio Tour. I felt at home immediately and have become a part of the community. My work is grounded in years of painting from observation. Recently this has moved to working from memory and sketch. The public land surrounding El Rito provides me with endless inspiration, as does the village itself.
